This was identical to the first L-4 with the exception of a hip roof instead of the gable roof. This made no difference to the observation/living quarters, but it made a dramatic difference in the appearance of the exterior lookout structure. This was the version constructed in the greatest numbers and became the version most identified with fire lookouts. However good examples are in short supply. Because this was constructed on many mountains which are still active lookouts, the few of this style left have been heavily modified. A good modified example is on Round Mountain, Deschutes NF. |
