The L-5 was simply a miniature1932-36 hip-roof L-4 only 10' x 10' in size. I don't believe L-5's were made in the gable roof or extended rafter versions. The objective was to get a minimum size lookout building package for peaks with very difficult access. The ones I have seen were on rocky spires that were difficult enough to reach climbing with both hands and feet. It must have been a real challenge to get the materials for even the small L-5 to these locations. None still exist, and I doubt that any were staffed for any length of time due to their location and small living quarters. The original lookout on Cultus Mtn. was an L-5. |
